I’ve known Bob for over 20 years. Usually I don’t reply to internet attacks that are empty and pointlessly ad hominem. But in this case I made an exception. First, Bob is perhaps too modest to mention that he also speaks French and some Vietnamese. Second, his experience of Asia is considerable, having lived and worked in Hong Kong, Kabul, Hanoi and various other countries. And as a trained anthropologist he has a deep and consistent interest in- and knowledge of– the many cultures and histories of the region. Above all he is a man of integrity who seeks the truth and is prepared to express it.
Those who seek an informed and wise opinion on Asia would be well advised to seek Bob’s advice.
